Mail Box Monday (11)

I went a little crazy this week with my borders coupons =) and ended up buying some great books that I can not wait to dive into! So this is what I got....

Pretty Dead
PEOPLE PITY ME, BUT MOSTLY THEY FEEL ENVY. I HAVE ALL THE LUXURY AND FREEDOM A GIRL MY AGE COULD WANT.

Something is happening to Charlotte Emerson. Like the fires that are ravaging the hills of Los Angeles, it consumes her from the inside out. But whether it is her eternal loneliness, the memory of her brother, the return of her first love, or the brooding, magnetic Jared-she cannot say. What if it's something more...

Something to do with the sudden tear in her perfect nails. The heat she feels when she's with Jared. The blood rushing once again to her cheeks and throughout her veins. For Charlotte is a vampire, witness to almost a century's worth of death and destruction. But not since she was a human girl has mortality touched her.

In what way will you be transformed?

Until now

Once Dead Twice Shy
Madison's prom was killer -- literally. For some reason she's been targeted by a dark reaper -- yeah, that kind of reaper -- intent on getting rid of her, body and soul. But before the reaper could finish the job, Madison was able to snag his strange, glowing amulet and get away.

Now she's stuck on Earth -- dead but not gone. Somehow the amulet gives her the illusion of a body, allowing her to toe the line between life and death. She still doesn't know why the dark reaper is after her, but she's not about to just sit around and let fate take its course.

With a little ingenuity, some light-bending, and the help of a light reaper (one of the good guys! Maybe . . . ), her cute crush, and oh yeah, her guardian angel, Madison's ready to take control of her own destiny once and for all, before it takes control of her.

Well, if she believed in that stuff.

Thirst
As to blood —
ah, blood, the whole subject fascinates me. I do like that as well, warm and dripping, when I am thirsty. And I am often thirsty....

Alisa has been in control of her urges for the five thousand years she has been a vampire. She feeds but does not kill, and she lives her life on the fringe to maintain her secret. But when her creator returns to hunt her, she must break her own rules in order to survive.

Her quest leads her to Ray. He is the only person who can help her; he also has every reason to fear her. Alisa must get closer to him to ensure her immortality. But as she begins to fall in love with Ray, suddenly there is more at stake than her own life....

Wings
Laurel was mesmerized, staring at the pale things with wide eyes. They were terrifyingly beautiful—too beautiful for words.

Laurel turned to the mirror again, her eyes on the hovering petals that floated beside her head. They looked almost like wings.

In this extraordinary tale of magic and intrigue, romance and danger, everything you thought you knew about faeries will be changed forever.

So what did you get?

Review: Water Witch

  • Title: Water Witch
  • Author: Deborah LeBlanc
  • Reading level: Adult
  • Paperback: 295 pages
  • Received From: FSB Media (Published: September 2008)
  • Genre: Fantasy/Fiction/YA
  • Cover: B
  • Overall: A-
  • ISBN-10: 0843960396
Dunny knew from an early age what it meant to be an outsider. Her special abilities earned her many names, like freak and water witch. So she vowed to keep her powers a secret. But now her talents may be the only hope of two missing children. A young boy and girl have vanished, feared lost in the mysterious bayous of Louisiana. But they didn't just disappear; they were taken. And amid the ghosts and spirits of the swamp, there is a danger worse than any other, one with very special plans for the children -- and for anyone who dares to interfere.

When I first started reading this book I was a little skeptical, mainly because it did not seem like the type of book that I normally read. However as I started I found myself so captured by how well written this book is, and how different it is from anything I have ever read. The characters are something that stood out to me the most, especially Poochie. The characters are of southern dialect and Leblanc capture everything from the way they talk to their description perfectly! Leblanc also painted a great picture of the scenery of Louisiana that I felt I was actually there.

The story line was very interesting to me because it was fresh and suspenseful, I was constantly on the edge of my seat. Also the layout that Leblanc choose to use with different characters narrating was a great addition to the plot. This story was about Dunny who has a special gift of being able to find things, which she does not normally share with others. However her sister needed her help in Louisianna to locate 2 children who have gone missing. When Dunny arives in Louisianna she finds out that the children missing are just one aspect of the story. Thus begins a thrilling tale full of advenutre and horror! This book was a different type of book for me usually I read young adult however I was glad to have read this!

Waiting on Wednesday (4)

My pick for this weeks Waiting on Wednesday is Fallen by Lauren Kate. It's release date is December 8, 2009, publication: Random House Children's Books, and I can not wait to get and read this book!

Seventeen-Year-Old Luce is a new student at Sword & Cross, an unwelcoming boarding/reform school in Savannah, Georgia. Luce’s boyfriend died under suspicious circumstances, and now she carries the guilt over his death with her as she navigates the unfriendly halls at Sword & Cross, where every student seems to have an unpleasant—even evil—history.

It’s only when she sees Daniel, a gorgeous fellow student, that Luce feels there’s a reason to be here—though she doesn’t know what it is. And Daniel’s frosty cold demeanor toward her? It’s really a protective device that he’s used again . . . and again. For Daniel is a fallen angel, doomed to fall in love with the same girl every 17 years . . . and watch her die. And Luce is a fellow immortal, cursed to be reincarnated again and again as a mortal girl who has no idea of who she really is.

Review: Dead as a Doornail (Sookie Stackhouse Book #5)

  • Title: Dead as a Doornail
  • Author: Charlaine Harris
  • Reading level: Adult
  • Paperback: 295 pages
  • Publisher: Ace Books; First Printing edition (May 3, 2005)
  • Genre: Fantasy/Fiction/YA
  • Cover: B
  • Overall: B-
  • ISBN-10: 0441012795
When Sookie's brother Jason's eyes start to change, she knows he's about to turn into a were-panther for the first time. But her concern becomes cold fear when a sniper sets his deadly sights on the local changeling population-and Jason's new panther brethren suspect he may be the shooter. Now, Sookie has until the next full moon to find out who's behind the attacks, unless the killer decides to find her first.

In this book you will meet a couple of new characters in both the were - panthers and in the werewolf community. Also you do meet a new vampire Charles who works for Eric, he is a pirate! I found him to be the funniest thing about this book. So to sum up this book for you (don't worry no spoilers) it starts off with Jason becoming a were - panther. However there is a shooter going around shooting all the two natureds (ie. shifters, were - panthers) and the were - panther society believes it is Jason because they think he is bitter for being bitten. However Sookie wants to prove that it is not him and ends up getting in all sorts of trouble because she becomes the shooters next target. Also while this is all going on Alcide father wants to become the packs new leader however Patrick another werewolf want to be the leader as well, and is spreading horrible rumors about Jackson (Alcide father). So they need Sookies help in the tournament for pack leader (which is basically the Olympics for werewolf's) to see if Patrick is going to sabotage the match's.

When I started this book I was very excited because they were adding a new mythical creatures (were-panther and a Tiger). However I was less than thrilled as going through the book to find that vampires were very scarce in this book. Eric being my favorite character was maybe in one or two chapters total, which was very sad. However I did like the interesting story line on the were - panthers and also the way the werewolf's chose their new pack leader. It is very gruesome and I think the most interesting part of the book. In comparison to the other four books this was my least favorite book, not because there were barely any vampires in it but also because there was not enough action in this book.

I did find the werewolf's and were - panthers very interesting however I though that they could have made more action scenes in the book. The middle of the book had very little going on in it and I think that is were I got bored. However it was interesting, i am not going to say it was a bad book, just not my favorite out of this series. I hope in the next book Eric is in it more (yes I think I am biased lol) he is just really funny in the previous books.
