Review: Rising Shadow

  • Title: Rising Shadow
  • Author: Jacquelyn Wheeler
  • Reading level: Young Adult
  • Paperback: 378 pages
  • Received From: Received from Author (Thanks Jacquelyn!!!)
  • Genre: Fantasy/Fiction
  • Cover: B-
  • Overall: A
  • ISBN-10: 0982516010
Ashlyn Woods just transferred to one of the most beautiful campuses on the west coast, where she can't wait to start her life over as a normal college student. But her plans take an unexpected turn when she discovers that she is a Soterian: a person who develops amazing powers when the balance of good and evil shifts too far in evil's favor. Soon she and the other Soterians are studying martial arts and learning to use their powers to prevent California from being plunged into chaos. But they quickly discover that they're up against a much more dangerous enemy than they anticipated. And when Ashlyn meets Kai, a devastatingly gorgeous guitar player, she realizes she must sacrifice more than she ever imagined.

This book is a great example that you shouldn't judge a book by its cover! When I read the synopsis of this book I was highly intrigued to check it out. Then I won the book from Jacquelyn and began to adventure through its pages. I was hooked, I could not stop reading even if I tried! I ended up waking up late for work one day because I was up until 4am reading this book! So to say that it surpassed my expectations would be an insult, It went above and beyond (kinda like Ashlyn lol) anything I expected!

The story is about Ashlyn who has been waiting to transfer to a new college on the west coast, and when she finally does her whole life changes! Ashlyn's and her roommate Rebecca instantly click and become good friends. Everything is normal and great and then Ashlyn discovers she can fly, and Rebbecca can read thoughts!?! They discover that they are Solterians and that there are others, and that they will need to reform their powers and fight evil. Sounds lie a lot to take on at the start to a new school year right? You have no idea! This plot is so unique and different, and definitly left me hanging on the edge of my seat! It says this is book one of the series and I am dieing to get the second one!!!

Each character was so well thought out and unique that they meshed well together without overshadowing one another. I grew very fond of Rebbecca, she is a good friend to Ashlyn and I found I could relate with her because we are around the same age. I was also found of Michael and his bad boy attitude I hope in the second book (I hope there is one lol) that his character starts to unravel more. Overall I think this was a very successful, well written book! I hope that there is a series because I will definitely keep reading. I definitely recommend this book to anyone who loves fantasy, and powers, and sitting on the edge of their seat =)

Will You Read It?

Ballad
By Maggie Stiefvater
James Morgan has an almost unearthly gift for music. And it has attracted Nuala, a soul-snatching faerie muse who fosters and then feeds on the creative energies of exceptional humans until they die. James has plenty of reasons to fear the faeries, but as he and Nuala collaborate on an achingly beautiful musical composition, James finds his feelings towards Nuala deepening. But the rest of the fairies are not as harmless. As Halloween—the day of the dead—draws near, James will have to battle the Faerie Queen and the horned king of the dead to save Nuala's life and his soul.

Author Of The Month: January

Maggie Stiefvater
I have chosen Maggie Stiefvater as my Author of TheMonth because I find her to be an amazing writer, and an all around amazing person. I find her words inspiring, and that she can paint a picture with them. I also find it interesting that she is not only a writer but has many talents, including art (you all know me a big art geek lol). So I hope you all enjoy her work as much as I do and below is a little bit about her from her website (for more information from her website Click Here).... Enjoy!

All of my life decisions have been based around my inability to be gainfully employed. Talking to yourself, staring into space, and coming to work in your pajamas are frowned upon when you're a waitress, calligraphy instructor, or technical editor (all of which I've tried), but are highly prized traits in novelists, musicians, and artists (I've made my living as one of these since I was 22).

I now live an eccentric life in the middle of nowhere, Virginia, with my charmingly straight-laced husband, two small kids, two neurotic dogs, one criminally insane cat, and a 1973 Camaro
named Loki.

I'm an avid reader, an award-winning colored pencil artist, and play several musical instruments, including the Celtic harp, the piano
, and the bagpipes. I also make great cocktail party conversation.

Here are some of my favorite works by her:

Waiting on Wednesday (5)

My pick for this weeks Waiting on Wednesday is Linger by Maggie Stiefvater. It's release date is July 20 2010, publication: Scholastic, and I can not wait to get and read this book! I really am spazing out, I NEED to read this book =P

In Maggie Stiefvater's Shiver, Grace and Sam found each other. Now, in Linger, they must fight to be together. For Grace, this means defying her parents and keeping a very dangerous secret about her own well-being. For Sam, this means grappling with his werewolf past . . . and figuring out a way to survive into the future. Add into the mix a new wolf named Cole, whose own past has the potential to destroy the whole pack. And Isabelle, who already lost her brother to the wolves . . . and is nonetheless drawn to Cole.

Mail Box Monday (17)

Its a new year and my first Mail Box Monday post of the year =) I can not believe it is 2010 already!!! I have so much to do this year and very little time to do it. I am in my final 11 weeks of college and extremely nervous, so I might be posting a lot to keep my mind off graduating (I hope you all don't mind =)... Any way after my ramble these are the amazing books I received this week.....

Bought (Thanks to my 25 dollar gift card from Santa):

Intertwined
Most
sixteen-year-olds have friends. Aden Stone has four human souls living inside him:

One can time-travel.

One can raise the dead.

One can tell the future.

And one can possess another human.

With no other family and a life spent in and out of institutions, Aden and the souls have become friends. But now they're causing him all kinds of trouble. Like, he'll blink and suddenly he's a younger Aden, reliving the past. One wrong move, and he'll change the future. Or he'll walk past a total stranger and know how and when she's going to die.

He's so over it. All he wants is peace.

And then he meets a girl who quiets the voices. Well, as long as he's near her. Why? Mary Ann Gray is his total opposite. He's a loner; she has friends. He doesn't care what anyone thinks; she tries to make everyone happy. And while he attracts the paranormal, she repels it. For her sake, he should stay away. But it's too late….

Somehow, they share an inexplicable bond of friendship. A bond about to be tested by a werewolf shape-shifter who wants Mary Ann for his own, and a vampire princess Aden can't resist.

Two romances, both forbidden. Still, the four will enter a dark underworld of intrigue and danger—but not everyone will come out alive….

A Touch of Dead
Cocktail waitress Sookie Stackhouse is no typical southern belle. She can read minds. And she’s got a thing for vampires. Which, in a town like Bon Temps, Louisiana, means she’ll have to watch her back -- and neck...

New York Times
–bestselling author Charlaine Harris has re-imagined the supernatural world with her “spunky” (Tampa Tribune) Southern Vampire novels starring telepathic waitress Sookie Stackhouse. Now, for the first time, here is every Sookie Stackhouse short story ever written -- together in one volume.

Fallen
There's something achingly familiar about Daniel Grigori.

Mysterious and aloof, he captures Luce Price's attention from the moment she sees him on her first day at the Sword & Cross boarding school in sultry Savannah, Georgia. He's the one bright spot in a place where cell phones are forbidden, the other students are all screw-ups, and security cameras watch every move.

Even though Daniel wants nothing to do with Luce--and goes out of his way to make that very clear--she can't let it go. Drawn to him like a moth to a flame, she has to find out what Daniel is so desperate to keep secret . . . even if it kills her.

Dangerously exciting and darkly romantic, Fallen is a page turning thriller and the ultimate love story.

By Blood We Live
From Dracula to Buffy the Vampire Slayer; from Castlevania to Tru Blood, the romance between popular culture and vampires hearkens back to humanity's darkest, deepest fears, flowing through our very blood, fears of death, and life, and insatiable hunger. And yet, there is an attraction, undeniable, to the vampire archetype, whether the pale European count, impeccably dressed and coldly masculine, yet strangely ambiguous, ready to sink his sharp teeth deep into his victims' necks, draining or converting them, or the vamp, the count's feminine counterpart, villain and victim in one, using her wiles and icy sexuality to corrupt man and woman alike...
Edited by John Joseph Adams (Wastelands, The Living Dead), By Blood We Live gathers together the best vampire literature of the last three decades from many of today's most renowned authors of fantasy, speculative fiction, and horror, including Stephen King, Joe Hill, Garth Nix, Neil Gaiman, Kelley Armstrong, Ken Macleod, Harry Turtledove, Carrie Vaughn, and Tad Williams.

Review: The Vampire is Just Not That Into You

  • Title: The Vampire is Just Not That Into You
  • Author: Vlad Mezrich
  • Reading level: Young Adult
  • Paperback: 176 pages
  • Received From: Received from Scholastic Publishing
  • Publisher: Scholastic Paperbacks (October 1, 2009)
  • Genre: Fantasy/Fiction/Informative
  • Cover: B
  • Overall: B+
  • ISBN-10: 0545202388
Are you in love with a vampire? Are you worried that you might not be his (blood) type? Do you wonder whether that cold stare means he isn’t interested . . . or if it’s because he’s been dead for three centuries (nothing personal)? Have you tried to coax him out of his crypt with a flash of your neck or a near-death situation that requires him to save you at the very last possible moment? Have you ever considered what it will be like to introduce him to your mother?

Even though your vampire’s skin is transfixingly translucent, he can still be very hard to read. Sometimes he’s simply holding back his true feelings, resisting the urge to bite you in the chance that one day you will truly love him. And other times . . . well, he’s just not that into you.

I can't help but say I love books like this! When I was younger I would find books like this and try and figure out what ever it is whether it be; What type of boy is your type, or what should you be when you grow up, ect. So when I was sent this book in the mail to review I could not help but smile =).

What I first noticed about this book was that the author put a lot of time and effort into breaking down and categorizing the subjects. I also enjoyed how each chapter not only had literature on things like "what the vampire thinks vs. what he says", but it also has charts, and diagrams. There are also different types of quizzes you can take to find out things like is your guy vampire, goth, gamer or emo.

This book is a lot of fun especially when you are hanging out with your friends and going through it taking the quizzes. If you want to find your vampire dream boat this book will help you out.
